Watch the film
A cinematic tour of the Sandveld course, the deep sand, the rocky climb, the mountain pass and the ancient caves, ending in a golden-hour finish. Watch the route come to life, then come earn it on 24 September.
Enter the ChallengeThis is not a road race. This is not a park run. This is a true test of grit.
Runners battle through deep sand, rocky terrain, mountain passes and untouched veld, following sections of the historic Perdevoetpad used during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899. Every step tells a story. Every kilometre challenges the body. Every finisher earns their place.
Where history, heritage and human endurance collide
The route passes ancient Bushman rock-art and heritage sites, tracing land the San walked long before the first road crossed this valley. On Heritage Day, you run where they roamed, through the raw beauty of the Sandveld and the story it still remembers.
Every metre, mapped
This is the actual course on the Donkieskraal farm, deep sand, the rocky climb, the mountain pass and the heritage caves, looping back to the start/finish. Explore it on the satellite map, or download the GPX for your watch.

Partner with history
The Donkie 21 is the first event of its kind in the West Coast District. Founding sponsors will forever be remembered as the businesses that launched a landmark race. Naming rights, trail signage, race shirts, medals and more.
Everything you need to know
The Donkie 21 takes place on Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September 2026, at Donkieskraal Guest Lodge on the Sandberg farm in the Sandveld, near Leipoldtville on South Africa's West Coast — about 25 km from Lambert's Bay and 35 km from Elands Bay.
Three distances: the 21 km Donkie Challenge (the premier event), the 10 km Donkie Infinity, and the 5 km Donkie Dash family run. Entries are limited to 300 runners across all distances.
Entry is R500 for the 21 km, R250 for the 10 km and R150 for the 5 km. You enter and pay securely online in one step — your place is confirmed once payment goes through and you receive a confirmation email.
It's an off-road cross-country trail race, not a road race or a park run. The 21 km loop runs through deep Sandveld sand, rocky terrain, a mountain-pass climb of roughly +400 m of ascent, open veld and the ancient Bushman caves, finishing at golden hour. It's a genuine test of grit.
Every finisher receives a medal, and the route is supported with water points, medical assistance and timing on course. There are also age, team and special-recognition categories with awards.
Yes. Donkieskraal Guest Lodge offers rock chalets, safari tents and campsites on the farm. Contact the lodge on 083 400 1828 or info@donkieskraal.co.za to book accommodation for race weekend.
The race is held on Heritage Day and follows land the San (Bushmen) walked long before the first road crossed the valley, passing ancient rock-art and heritage sites, as well as sections of the historic Perdevoetpad used during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899.
